Domestique: Bringing Natural Wine to DC's Doorstep, One Month at a Time

How Domestique's Wine Club connects DC members to hard-to-find, direct-import natural wine every month — with Table22 handling the logistics behind each shipment.

Washington, DC | Natural Wine Shop | Wine Club Subscription

Key Results

  • A home for small producers: club demand justifies direct-import, small-batch wines the shop couldn't otherwise commit to
  • Built-in subscription flexibility: a three-bottle base scales up to a full case with add-on tiers
  • Fulfillment fully offloaded: Table22 runs the backend logistics so the team has time to taste and curate

Wine as a crop, not a commodity

Domestique opened its doors in DC's Truxton Circle neighborhood as a natural wine shop with a straightforward premise: work directly with small, independent producers and tell their stories honestly. The name is a nod to competitive cycling, where a domestique is the rider who works in service of the team rather than chasing personal glory, a fitting label for a shop built around lifting up growers instead of big names. That approach has earned Domestique recognition as one of the country's top wine shops from outlets including Wine Enthusiast, Food & Wine, and PUNCH.

For Meri Lugo, Managing Partner at Domestique, the thing she wishes more people understood about the industry is that wine is agriculture. Like strawberries or apples, it's seasonal, it's limited, and it's subject to the same climate swings that affect any other crop.

"A lot of the wine that we bring in is made in very small quantities," she explains. "These are made with grapes that are organically grown. They are subject to the same whims of climate change and of nature that all other agricultural products are. So you never know what you're going to get, and the quantities are going to be really small. If you see it on the shelf, it might not be here next week."

A club built around drinking together

That scarcity is exactly why the club exists. When a bottle might not be on the shelf next week, a subscription becomes the surest way to get it into people's hands before it's gone. It’s also the best way to make good on the shop's values, showcasing and educating around small, independent, naturally made wine from what Lugo calls "salt of the earth people" trying to keep the lights on, not big corporations.

For Lugo, that same expression of values is inseparable from why people drink wine in the first place. "We think the core purpose of wine is to bring people together," she says. "People have gathered over wine for millennia to connect, to collaborate, to take a load off, to just be human beings together. We think the best way to do that is to collectively drink wine, to experience it together throughout the city, throughout the country."

That belief is built into how the club runs on Table22 today: three bottles a month, delivered on a shared cadence so members open their shipments around the same week and taste together, even from separate kitchens. Members who want more can fill up the case with additional Daily-Drinker or Special-Occasion bottles, scaling a three-bottle month into a six- or twelve-bottle one.

The Wine Club also gives the Domestique team a committed, monthly outlet for the small-batch, direct-import wines that are hardest to plan around. "Having this set amount of people that we get to shop for every month means that we get to support, in very actionable ways, small producers," Lugo says. "We liaise with a lot of producers directly, and we're really able to bring their wines to people."

Offloading the “uninteresting” parts

With such an impressive subscriber base, Lugo is candid that club week is a lift. "It's logistically a lot of work. Lots of bottles to unpack, lots of boxes to pack," she says. "It definitely feels like a labor of love. Our whole team, it's kind of like all hands on deck. The whole place just turns into a wine club fulfillment center in the best possible way."

That's where Table22 comes in. Rather than absorb every part of that logistical load themselves, the Domestique team leans on Table22 to handle the parts that don't require a palate.

"Table22 has taken away a lot of that nitty gritty, hard stuff. We get to focus on the fun stuff: opening the bottles, tasting the bottles, talking to our guests and community members about the bottles we're super stoked about. Table22 does the uninteresting parts."

- Meri Lugo, Managing Partner, Domestique

For a club with literally hundreds of subscriptions, offloading that "nitty gritty" is essential to keeping Lugo's time where it counts.

Looking ahead: follow your palate

Asked what she'd tell another shop owner considering a club, Lugo points to conviction.

"Follow your heart," she says. "Pick the wines that you're passionate about, that you want to drink, that you're excited about, that you want to tell the stories of, and people connect with that. People want a point of view. They want to connect with authenticity."

That conviction is easier to hold onto when the shop isn't also fielding billing questions or fulfillment hiccups. With Table22 running the club behind the scenes, Domestique's focus stays on the wine, the producers, and the story behind every bottle members open.

Our platform, your palate. Welcome to the Club.
